Irish Derby
A mellow place to purchase Irish Derby Tickets is this site.Owned and bred by the Aga Khan and trained at Newmarket by Michael Stoute , Shergar had run only twice as a two year old.
Shergar was considered to be one of the very best of the post war period and his victory in the Epsom Derby recorded the longest winning margin in the history of the race.
It was the 1981 Irish Derby which saw Shergar, a horse at his peak and completely dominating all others.
It is said that during the race Shergar appeared to be bored.
With about three furlongs to go Shergar coasted past his rivals, tail swishing and ears pricked crossed the finishing line with no apparent effort.
Later that year and following a gruelling St Ledger in which Shergar finished fourth, the horse was retired.
In 1983 whilst at the Ballymany Stud in County Kildare, on the night of the 8th February and 2 years after winning the Irish Derby, Shergar was abducted.
Shergar's estimated stud value was £10 million. Shergar was never recovered. It is widely believed that the kidnappers killed Shergar when they realised that the £2 million ransom demand would not be met by the Aga Khan.
